Pick-up from your hotel in Hanoi Old Quarter at 07:00. The drive to Pu Luong Nature Reserve takes around four hours through the mountain roads of Hoa Binh and Thanh Hoa provinces. Arrive for lunch and check in to your eco garden accommodation — perched above the valley with views across the terraces.
The afternoon trek begins from a small alley beside the Thai stilt houses, climbing through the lanes to the viewpoints above the valley. The terraces here are worked by the same families that have farmed them for generations, and the view from the ridgeline changes entirely depending on the season. The path descends into Kho Muong village — a tight settlement of traditional houses tucked into the hillside, one of the least disturbed villages in the reserve. From the village the trail continues to the entrance of Bat Cave, accessible depending on weather conditions. Return to the eco garden for dinner.
Banh Mi moment: Arriving at the ridgeline viewpoint above Kho Muong in the late afternoon — the terraces drop away below you in tiers, the stilt houses in the valley are lit, and Hanoi feels very far away.
