Pu Luong Nature Reserve: 2-Day Trek and Bamboo Boat

Rice terraces, Thai stilt houses, and a river you cross on a bamboo boat.

Trip duration: 2 days

Pu Luong 2-Day Trek: Kho Muong Village, Bamboo Waterwheels and Cham River Boat Ride

Trip duration: 2 days

Pu Luong sits four hours from Hanoi but looks like a different country: steeply terraced valleys, Thai ethnic minority villages built on stilts above the rice fields, and a river the locals still navigate by bamboo boat.

Two days is enough to reach the best of it. The first afternoon takes you into Kho Muong village via the terrace ridgelines above. The second morning follows the Cham River through Ba village, past the bamboo waterwheels that irrigate the Thai fields, and ends with a boat ride before the drive back to Hanoi.

Trip Itinerary

Pick-up from your hotel in Hanoi Old Quarter at 07:00. The drive to Pu Luong Nature Reserve takes around four hours through the mountain roads of Hoa Binh and Thanh Hoa provinces. Arrive for lunch and check in to your eco garden accommodation — perched above the valley with views across the terraces.

The afternoon trek begins from a small alley beside the Thai stilt houses, climbing through the lanes to the viewpoints above the valley. The terraces here are worked by the same families that have farmed them for generations, and the view from the ridgeline changes entirely depending on the season. The path descends into Kho Muong village — a tight settlement of traditional houses tucked into the hillside, one of the least disturbed villages in the reserve. From the village the trail continues to the entrance of Bat Cave, accessible depending on weather conditions. Return to the eco garden for dinner.

Banh Mi moment: Arriving at the ridgeline viewpoint above Kho Muong in the late afternoon — the terraces drop away below you in tiers, the stilt houses in the valley are lit, and Hanoi feels very far away.

“
Pu Luong is the place I take guests who want to see what the rest of northern Vietnam looked like before the tourist trail arrived. The bamboo waterwheels are still turning, the stilt houses are still lived in, and the families in Kho Muong have not changed much about how they farm. The boat ride at the end of day two is quiet in the best way — a good last memory before the road back to Hanoi.
”

The community here practices traditional rice farming and has maintained its architecture and way of life largely unchanged.
Traditional Thai irrigation structures built from bamboo, positioned in the river to catch the current and lift water into a series of channels that feed the terraced fields above. Pu Luong has some of the most impressive examples in Vietnam — still in daily use, not preserved as a display.
