Mai Chau Bicycle Tour and Pu Luong Trek: Thai Villages, Dance Show and Rice Terrace Trekking

Trip duration: 2 days

The Mai Chau valley sits three hours from Hanoi and feels like a pause rather than a destination: flat rice fields, Thai stilt houses along the lanes, and the kind of afternoon that is best spent on a bicycle with no particular agenda.

Day one stays in the valley — lunch, bikes, villages, and an evening with the Thai traditional dance show and can wine (the bamboo-straw communal wine the Thai communities have served at every gathering for centuries). Day two drives 35 km to Pu Luong Nature Reserve for a morning of rice terrace trekking and a village lunch, then the return to Hanoi.

Trip Itinerary

Pick-up from your hotel in Hanoi Old Quarter between 07:00 and 08:00. A short rest stop on the way, arriving in the Mai Chau valley by late morning for a photo stop above the valley before descending. Traditional lunch prepared by a local Thai family — vegetarian available.

The afternoon is by bicycle with your guide through the surrounding villages: farmers working the fields, women at looms weaving the coloured scarves the Thai are known for, and the kind of quiet lanes that reward a slow pace. Free time from 17:00 to cycle further, walk, or browse the weavers' stalls at your own pace.

Dinner in the bungalow, followed by a Thai traditional dance show performed by local dancers in the valley. The evening ends with ruou can — traditional can wine, drunk communally through long bamboo straws from a clay jar. Overnight in a Thai stilt-house bungalow.

Banh Mi moment: The can wine jar in the centre of the table after the dance ends — the musicians still sitting nearby, the bamboo straws passed around, the valley outside completely dark and quiet.

“
The Mai Chau valley is the easiest place from Hanoi to actually slow down. The bicycle afternoon feels low-key until you realise you have spent three hours talking to weavers and watching people work. The dance show is not a performance for tourists — these are the same dances the communities perform at weddings and New Year. The can wine at the end of the evening is the part guests remember longest.
”

Frequently asked questions about this trip

Ruou can is a traditional fermented rice wine made by Thai and other ethnic minority communities in northern Vietnam. It is served in a clay jar and drunk communally through long bamboo straws. The jar is passed around the group and refilled with water as the level drops. It is an integral part of Thai celebrations and gatherings.
A live performance of traditional Thai ethnic minority dances performed by local dancers from the Mai Chau valley communities. The show typically runs for 30 to 45 minutes after dinner and is followed by the can wine ceremony. It is performed in the bungalow complex, not a theatre.
Easy to moderate. The morning trek covers rice terrace paths and village lanes — around 5 to 7 km in total, with some uneven ground and gentle inclines. No trekking experience is required.
The group tour uses a shared van with other guests and follows fixed departure times. The private tour uses a dedicated air-conditioned car for your group only, with more flexibility on stops and pace. The itinerary, meals, accommodation, and guide are the same for both.
Yes. Traditional Thai cuisine includes many vegetable dishes. Let us know at booking and the family will prepare a vegetarian version of all meals.
Yes. The bicycle ride is flat and easy, and the dance show and can wine ceremony tend to go down well with all ages. The Pu Luong trek on day two is manageable for children who are comfortable walking for two hours. Let us know ages at booking.
