Mai Chau Day Tour: Thung Khe Pass, Ban Lac & Pom Coong Villages

Two hours from Hanoi. A valley that moves at a completely different speed.

Trip duration: 11 hours

Mai Chau Day Tour: Thung Khe Pass, Two Villages, and a Lunch in a Stilt House

Trip duration: 11 hours

The road out of Hanoi climbs slowly through Hoa Binh province, the valley getting wider and greener as the city falls away. By the time you reach Thung Khe Pass, the Mai Chau valley is spread out below you: rice paddies, White Thai villages, limestone ridges on three sides.

You spend the afternoon on foot through Ban Lac and Pom Coong — two villages that sit close together but feel distinct. Weaving frames in open doorways, kids on bicycles, elders in traditional dress who are not performing for the camera.

Lunch is in a Thai stilt house, transfer and guide are handled, and you're back in Hanoi before dark.

What you'll experience

🏔️

Thung Khe Pass viewpoint

The Mai Chau valley from above: rice fields, river bends, and the limestone wall that closes the valley to the south.

🏘️

Ban Lac Village walk

The larger of the two villages, where White Thai families have lived in stilt houses for generations and weaving is still a working trade.

🏘️

Pom Coong Village walk

Quieter and less visited than Ban Lac, five minutes down the valley path — the daily rhythms here are less observed.

🏠

Lunch in a Thai stilt house

A local-style Vietnamese lunch eaten on the raised floor of a traditional stilt house, with the valley outside the window.

🌾

Mai Chau valley rice paddies

Flat, irrigated fields that shift colour with the season — vivid green in summer, gold at harvest.

What to expect

  1. Pick-up from your Hanoi hotel

Your guide and driver collect you from your hotel in the Old Quarter or Hoan Kiem area. Departure between 07:00 and 07:45 depending on hotel location — confirmed at booking.

  2. Thung Khe Pass (White Cloud Pass) viewpoint

Stop at the pass for the panoramic view of the valley below. On a clear morning the full width of Mai Chau is visible — rice paddies, the river, the surrounding ridges. 20–30 minutes here before the descent.

  3. Ban Lac Village walk

Walk the main path through Ban Lac, the larger and older of the two villages. Weavers at floor looms, stilt houses on hardwood stilts, vegetable gardens running to the paddy edge. Your guide provides context on White Thai traditions and community life.

  4. Lunch in a traditional stilt house

A local-style Vietnamese spread eaten cross-legged on a mat in a traditional Thai stilt house, with the valley view from the open sides. Sticky rice, grilled fish, bamboo shoots. Slower and cooler than any restaurant on the road back.

  5. Pom Coong Village

A short walk from Ban Lac brings you to Pom Coong, a smaller and quieter village on the other side of the valley path. Fewer visitors come here. Time to walk at your own pace before the return drive.

  6. Return drive to Hanoi

The return follows the same mountain road through Hoa Binh. Arriving at your hotel in Hanoi around 19:00.

“
Nông Văn Hải has been guiding day trips out of Hanoi into the northern highlands for years. His easy manner with village communities in the valley — and with guests who've never left the city — makes a long day in a van feel unhurried. He knows which stilt house serves the best lunch and which path through the paddies you'll want to photograph.
”
