Half-Day Saigon Tour by Vintage Vespa

Saigon from the back of a Vespa. No bus, no convoy.

Trip duration: 5 hours

Half-Day Saigon by Vintage Vespa: Backstreets, Chinatown, Bird Cafés and Street Food

Trip duration: 5 hours

There are two ways to see Saigon. The first is from a tour bus, moving between landmarks on a schedule someone else designed. The second is on the back of a vintage Vespa, weaving through alleyways with a local guide who knows which bird café the old men go to every afternoon, which market the neighbourhood actually shops at, and which corner of Chợ Lớn has barely changed in fifty years.

We partner with Vespa Adventures for this tour because their approach matches ours: small groups, genuine local knowledge, an experience that puts you inside the city rather than in front of it. Maximum seven guests per departure means this never becomes a convoy. The route covers Saigon's backstreets, a neighbourhood bird café, a working local market with street food, Chợ Lớn — one of Southeast Asia's largest Chinatowns — a Buddhist pagoda, and the French-colonial landmarks seen from the saddle.

Vespa with driver, guide, snacks and drinks at stops, helmet, raincoat, hotel pick-up and drop-off: all in. Runs morning or afternoon.

What you'll experience

🛵

Vintage Vespa with driver

Your own vintage Vespa and experienced local driver for the full five hours — you ride pillion through streets a tour bus can't enter.

🏘️

Residential backstreets

The alleyways and lane networks of the city's inner districts — the part of Saigon where people actually live, away from the tourist circuit.

🐦

Bird café

A neighbourhood institution: local men gather here daily with caged songbirds, Vietnamese coffee in hand. Your guide explains the culture around it.

🛒

Neighbourhood market and street food

A working local market, not a tourist one. Your guide walks you through it and you sample Vietnamese street food with him as you go.

🏮

Chợ Lớn Chinatown

One of Southeast Asia's largest Chinatowns and one of Saigon's most layered quarters — your guide unpacks its history on foot.

🛕

Buddhist pagoda

A working pagoda in active daily use — incense, offerings, and the ordinary religious life of the city, explained by your guide.

🏛️

Reunification Palace and Central Post Office

The colonial and wartime landmarks, seen from the Vespa at street level rather than from a bus window — a different angle on the same city.

What to expect

  1. Hotel pick-up, meet your guide and driver, safety briefing

Your guide and Vespa driver arrive at your hotel at 08:00 (morning) or 14:00 (afternoon). Helmet fitted, brief safety introduction, and you're off.

  2. Saigon's residential backstreets and alleyways

The first section of the ride goes deep into the lane networks of the inner districts — the city's residential fabric that a tour bus can't access. Your guide narrates what you're seeing.

  3. Bird café: coffee with the locals and their songbirds

A stop at a neighbourhood bird café, a Saigonese institution where local men bring caged songbirds every afternoon. Vietnamese coffee, conversation, and a window into a daily ritual most visitors never encounter.

  4. Local neighbourhood market and Vietnamese street food

A working market where the surrounding neighbourhood actually shops. Your guide leads you through the stalls and you eat street food with him — included in the tour.

  5. Chợ Lớn: Saigon's Chinatown on foot with your guide

One of Southeast Asia's largest Chinatowns and one of the most culturally layered corners of the city. The Vespa parks and you walk with your guide through the temples, shophouses, and markets.

  6. Buddhist pagoda, Reunification Palace, Central Post Office — then back to your hotel

A working Buddhist pagoda in one of the city's older quarters, then the Vespa rolls past the 1891 Central Post Office and Reunification Palace before returning you to your hotel by 13:00 or 19:00.
