Packing Smart for Vietnam
Vietnam's climate varies dramatically from north to south and season to season. Whether you're trekking in Sapa's mountains, cruising Ha Long Bay, or exploring the Mekong Delta, smart packing makes all the difference. The key principle: pack light and wash as you go.
Clothing Essentials
Vietnam is a casual country. Outside of high-end restaurants in the cities, you rarely need anything formal. But temple visits require covered shoulders and knees, so plan accordingly.
- Lightweight, quick-dry clothing: 4–5 t-shirts and 2–3 shorts/pants in moisture-wicking fabric
- Long pants and sleeved shirt: Essential for temples, sun protection, and mosquito defense
- Rain jacket: Compact, packable — you will encounter rain regardless of season
- Comfortable walking shoes: Breathable sneakers or trail shoes for cities and treks
- Flip-flops: For beaches, hostels, and the endless shoe-off moments
- Warm layer: Fleece or down jacket if visiting Sapa or northern highlands (Oct–Mar)
Health and Safety Gear
- Sunscreen (SPF 50+): The tropical sun is intense — reapply often
- Insect repellent: DEET-based for rural areas and evenings
- Basic first aid: Band-aids, ibuprofen, anti-diarrheal, rehydration salts
- Hand sanitizer: Street food stalls don't always have soap
Tech and Travel Essentials
- Universal power adapter: Vietnam uses Type A, C, and F plugs (220V)
- Portable charger: 10,000mAh minimum for long bus days
- eSIM or local SIM: Get a Viettel or Mobifone SIM at the airport — data is incredibly cheap
- Dry bag: Protects electronics during boat trips and monsoon downpours
- Photocopies of passport: Keep digital and physical copies separate from the original
