Hoi An Countryside Bicycle Tour: Half-Day Route

Hoi An is smaller than it looks. The countryside around it is not.

Trip duration: 4 hours

Half-Day Cycling Tour of Hoi An's Countryside: Herb Gardens, Rice Fields and River Villages

Trip duration: 4 hours

Everyone who comes to Hoi An walks the old town. Far fewer make it out to the countryside that surrounds it — and that's exactly where the quieter, more enduring character of the place lives.

This half-day cycling route follows the landscape just beyond the tourist centre: the herb gardens of Tra Que, where farmers grow the fresh vegetables that end up on every restaurant table in town; rice fields and shrimp farms along the flat delta roads; the traditional homes and areca palm gardens of An My Village; and the nipa palm-lined waterways of Cam Thanh, where the Thu Bon's tributaries spread out toward the sea. The route ends with a break at a café known to locals before the easy ride back to your hotel.

Bicycle, local guide, all site visits, and mineral water included. Runs morning or afternoon — see the note below about the best departure time in summer.

What you'll experience

🌿

Tra Que Vegetable Village

The herb and vegetable gardens that supply Hoi An's restaurants — meet a farmer and see what's actually growing here.

🌾

Rice fields and shrimp farms

Flat delta roads past working rice paddies and aquaculture ponds — the agricultural backbone of the countryside between Hoi An and the coast.

🌴

An My Village

Traditional tile-roofed homes and areca palm gardens in a village that sees few foreign visitors and has changed very little.

🛶

Cam Thanh and the Thu Bon tributaries

The point where the river fans out into nipa palm-shaded channels before reaching the sea — the same waterways used by local fishermen every morning.

Local café stop

A break at a café known to Hoi An locals rather than tour groups — the natural midpoint before the return ride.

🚲

Flat route, easy pace

The roads are flat and quiet throughout. The guide keeps the pace unhurried — this is a ride to see things, not to cover distance.

What to expect

  1. Guide meets you at your hotel with bicycles

Your guide arrives at your hotel at the agreed time with bicycles ready. A quick check before you set off.

  2. Tra Que Vegetable Village: herb gardens and a conversation with a farmer

The first stop: the working herb and vegetable gardens that supply Hoi An's restaurants. Your guide introduces you to the farmer and explains what's growing and how the village has supplied the town for generations.

  3. Cycle past rice fields and shrimp farms toward An My Village

The route runs flat and quiet through the agricultural land between Tra Que and the coast — rice paddies on one side, aquaculture ponds on the other.

  4. An My Village: traditional homes and areca palm gardens

A village of tile-roofed houses and areca palm groves that sees very few visitors. Your guide walks you through the lanes and explains the village's connection to Hoi An's trading history.

  5. Cam Thanh: nipa palms and the Thu Bon tributaries

The route reaches the waterways where the Thu Bon River fans out into channels shaded by dense nipa palms. A pause at the riverbank before the return leg.

  6. Local café break, then cycle back to your hotel

A stop at a café frequented by locals before the easy ride back. The guide returns you to your hotel to end the tour.
