Bach Ma National Park: Full-Day Trek from Hue

Five lakes, one summit at 1,450 metres, and 600 steps down to a 300-metre waterfall.

Trip duration: 9 hours

Bach Ma National Park Day Trip from Hue: Summit Viewpoint, Five Lakes Trek and Do Quyen Waterfall

Trip duration: 9 hours

Bach Ma sits 50 kilometres south of Hue and about a thousand metres above it. The temperature drops noticeably on the way up, the forest closes in on both sides of the road, and by the time you reach the summit the coast below is a completely different world.

The day covers the park's main circuit: the Hai Vong Dai panoramic viewpoint at the summit, a trek through the Five Lakes where the fifth pool is cold enough to swim in even in summer, and the descent to Do Quyen waterfall, 300 metres high and reached by more than 600 steps that are worth every one of them. All this with a picnic lunch on the mountain.

Frequently asked questions about this trip

The Five Lakes trek is easy: a well-maintained path through the forest from the km 17 parking area to Lake No. 5, around 3 to 4 km. The Do Quyen waterfall descent is moderate: more than 600 steps going down, then the same 600 steps back up. It takes around 45 minutes each way. Guests who would rather skip the steps can view the waterfall from the top platform instead.
Yes. Lake No. 5 is the traditional swimming and rest stop on the Five Lakes trek. The water is cold, clear, and fed directly from the mountain above. Bring a swimsuit or shorts to change into.
A 300-metre waterfall inside Bach Ma National Park, one of the tallest in central Vietnam. The top platform gives a view down the full drop into the forest below. The 600-step staircase descends the cliff to the base, where you stand beside the falling water.
Comfortable closed-toe shoes with grip are essential. A light warm layer for the summit β€” the temperature at 1,450m can be 10 to 15 degrees cooler than Hue. Swimwear or quick-dry shorts for Lake No. 5. Sunscreen and insect repellent. Mineral water is included; bring a refillable bottle.
February to August offers the driest conditions on the trails and the clearest views from the summit. September to December is the heaviest rainfall season in the Bach Ma area β€” trails can be slippery and cloud cover often blocks the Hai Vong Dai viewpoint.
Yes, with some caveats. The Five Lakes trek is manageable for children comfortable walking 3 to 4 km. The 600 Do Quyen steps are steep; younger children may find the climb back up tiring. The swimming at Lake No. 5 is a reliable highlight for kids. Let us know ages at booking.
