Cat Ba All-in-One Day Tour: Lan Ha Bay & Viet Hai

Cat Ba does not end at the harbour. It ends at the top.

Trip duration: 9 hours

Cat Ba in One Day: Cruise, Trek, Village & Kayak

Trip duration: 9 hours

Most day trips here pick one thing: a cruise, a hike, or a kayak. This one does all three, plus a summit with 360-degree views and a village lunch, without feeling rushed.

The day moves from water to forest to mountain and back. You cruise past Cai Beo, bike 2.5 km through Cat Ba National Park, climb to Hai Quan Peak where Lan Ha, Ha Long, and Bai Tu Long Bay all open up at once, then paddle at Ba Trai Dao.

Lunch is cooked by a family in Viet Hai, a village reachable only by water. Transfer, guide, bikes, kayaks, every entrance fee: all in.

Route map - Cat Ba All-in-One Day Tour: Lan Ha Bay & Viet Hai

What you'll experience

Lan Ha Bay cruise

A slow passage through one of northern Vietnam's least-visited stretches of bay, past sheer limestone karsts.

🏘️

Cai Beo fishing village

Floating houses against limestone cliffs: a working community that has existed here for 7,000 years.

🐢

Rua Giong Island

The turtle-shaped karst that is the emblem of Lan Ha Bay, at the very heart of the cruise route.

🚲

Viet Hai by bike

A 2.5 km flat ride through Cat Ba National Park's acacia forest to a village with no road connection.

🥾

Hai Quan Peak trek

A two-hour moderate climb to a summit with 360-degree views over Lan Ha, Ha Long, and Bai Tu Long Bay.

🛶

Ba Trai Dao kayaking

Three sheltered beaches between karsts: paddle through the coves and swim before the return.

🍜

Viet Hai village lunch

A home-cooked Vietnamese meal at a local family house, part of the village's community programme.

What to expect

  1. Cruise from Beo Harbour past Cai Beo Ancient Fishing Village

Slip into Lan Ha Bay on a slow, comfortable passage. The first stretch glides past Cai Beo: floating houses against sheer limestone cliffs, a working community 7,000 years old.

  2. Cua Dong channel crossing to Rua Giong (Turtle) Island

The boat crosses into the heart of the bay, where the karst towers crowd the water. Rua Giong, shaped like a surfacing turtle, is the emblem of Lan Ha Bay.

  3. Viet Hai pier: bikes and 2.5 km through Cat Ba National Park

Land at Viet Hai pier and swap the boat for bicycles. A flat, easy 2.5 km ride follows an acacia-forest trail through the national park. The village is reachable only by water — there is no road.

  4. Hai Quan Peak trek: two hours, 360-degree views over three bays

A moderate climb through primary forest leads to Hai Quan Peak. From the top, Lan Ha Bay, Ha Long Bay, and Bai Tu Long Bay all open up at once from a viewpoint very few visitors reach.

  5. Home-cooked lunch at a Viet Hai family house

Descend to the village for a Vietnamese lunch cooked by a local family: rice, river fish, fresh vegetables. The meal is part of Viet Hai's own community tourism programme.

  6. Ba Trai Dao: kayak and swim between three karst beaches

Cruise to Ba Trai Dao and paddle through sheltered coves between the karsts. Swim, cool off, and take your time before the return leg.

  7. Back at Beo Harbour by 16:45

Cat Ba Town guests are dropped at their hotels. Hanoi guests board the transfer for the journey home, arriving in the Old Quarter around 20:20.

“
Hải grew up between the limestone islands of Lan Ha Bay and the forests of Cat Ba National Park. He has spent eight years guiding the active day trips here: the Viet Hai crossing, the climb to Hai Quan Peak, the jungle trails. He works directly with the local families whose kitchens and bikes make the day possible, and his pace is steady: he'll get anyone to the summit.
”

Frequently asked questions about this trip

Both options run. The Hanoi departure includes a round-trip transfer from the Old Quarter: pick-up is at 05:30-06:00, you board at Beo Harbour around 08:00, and you're back in Hanoi by ~20:20. The Cat Ba Town departure runs 08:00-16:45 and is the easier option if you're already on the island.
Hanoi guests: Cat Ba Express office at 214 Tran Quang Khai Street, Hoan Kiem. Cat Ba Town guests: hotel pick-up is included. Your confirmation spells out the exact point and time for your chosen departure.
The Hai Quan Peak trek is a roughly two-hour climb with some steep and uneven sections — anyone comfortable walking for extended periods will manage. The 2.5 km bike ride through the national park is flat and easy. The kayaking is at your own pace. You can skip the summit and wait at the base if needed.
Groups run 2 to 16. Solo travellers, couples, and small groups all fit well. Booking opens up to 24 hours before departure.
Swimwear, a change of clothes, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a small dry bag for valuables on the kayak. Closed-toe shoes or sturdy sandals for the trek and bike sections. Hanoi guests should bring a few snacks for the long travel legs.
February to June and September to December give the most reliable weather. July and August can be hot and occasionally wet, but the tour runs year-round.
Light rain doesn't stop the tour. In heavier weather your guide adjusts the route; the bay and kayaking sections are usually still manageable, and the national park forest provides cover on the trek.
Yes. It isn't included and we strongly recommend it before you book anything in Vietnam.
