Waterfalls, Stone Villages & a 14-Story Pass: Vietnam's Most Underrated Motorbike Loop

Trip duration: 3 days

Cao Bang Loop Easy Rider: 3-Day Motorbike Tour — Ban Gioc Waterfall, Pac Bo Cave & Khuoi Ky Stone Village

Trip duration: 3 days

Most travellers who ride the north already know Ha Giang. Far fewer have made it to Cao Bang — and that's exactly what makes it special.

Cao Bang Province sits in Vietnam's remote northeast, bordering China across a landscape every bit as dramatic as the Ha Giang Loop, but quieter, less visited, and in many ways more surprising. Over three days, you'll ride through rolling grass fields and ancient cave systems, stand at the base of Ban Gioc — Southeast Asia's largest waterfall — sleep in a 400-year-old Tay stone village, trace the jungle paths of Vietnam's revolutionary history at Pac Bo Cave, and finish by conquering the Khau Coc Cha Pass: fourteen switchback stories of mountain road that riders come back talking about long after the trip ends.

We run this loop with experienced local Easy Riders who know every bend in the road and every family worth stopping to meet. Nights are spent in a traditional stone house homestay in Khuoi Ky and a peaceful eco-stay near Pac Bo — two of the most atmospheric places to sleep in the entire north. Meals are home-cooked, local, and generous.

Cao Bang rewards the travellers who find it. We've been running this route long enough to know what makes it work — and we're glad to take you there.

Trip Itinerary

|

Meet your Easy Rider in Cao Bang City, then ride out across highland meadows to an enormous cave system before settling into a 400-year-old stone village for the night.

 • 09:30 — Meet your Easy Rider and depart Cao Bang City: safety briefing, route overview, bike check, helmet and rain gear handover.
 • Morning — Ba Quang Grass Field: a sweeping highland meadow, wide and open — a proper introduction to Cao Bang's landscape.
 • Mid-morning — Nguom Ngao Cave (Tiger Cave): one of Vietnam's most impressive cave systems, with massive chambers and ancient stalactites; its Tay name means "Tiger Cave."
 • 16:00–17:00 — Arrive Khuoi Ky Stone Village and check in to your homestay: a 400-year-old Tay ethnic village where every house is built entirely from stone — walls, roofs and paths alike — one of the most intact traditional villages in northern Vietnam.
 • 19:00 — Family dinner at the homestay: home-cooked Tay dishes and warm hospitality in one of the north's most extraordinary overnight stops.

“
I'm Vàng A Sình, and Cao Bang is the loop I send my friends on when they've already done Ha Giang and want something quieter and more real. I've ridden every bend of this route for years — I know which family in Khuoi Ky cooks the best dinner and exactly where to stop on the Khau Coc Cha Pass for the photo of all fourteen tiers. Come ride it with me; you'll see a side of the north most travellers never reach.
”

Frequently asked questions about this trip

Your tour begins in Cao Bang early on Day 1, but Day 0 (arrival day) is included at no extra charge. A limousine bus transfer from Hanoi to Cao Bang is part of the tour price, with timing confirmed at booking, along with a free overnight stay in Cao Bang City on arrival — dormitory or private room available — so you're rested and ready to ride by morning.
Yes. Self-riding is available only to guests holding a valid international motorbike driving licence; we provide a semi-automatic 110cc bike. If you're unsure whether your licence qualifies, contact us before booking and we'll check. If you'd rather not ride, an experienced local Easy Rider drives and you simply enjoy the scenery.
This is a medium-difficulty adventure: no riding experience is needed if you ride pillion with an Easy Rider, and the days mix riding with short walks (such as the 20-minute climb at Khau Coc Cha). We run small groups of 2 to 12 guests, keeping things personal and flexible on the road.
Pack only essentials in a small backpack for the loop. Large suitcases are stored securely at our Cao Bang office, and valuables such as laptops and electronics are kept at the reception desk while you ride.
Both nights are spent in genuine local homes — a 400-year-old Tay stone house in Khuoi Ky on Day 1 and an eco-stay or homestay near Pac Bo on Day 2. They're clean, warm, and full of character. Guests who need air-conditioning or en-suite facilities should contact us in advance so we can discuss options.
Day 2 is the most scenic day of the loop. Charge all your devices in Khuoi Ky on the Day 1 night, because there's little chance to recharge between stops. Ban Gioc Waterfall and the fourteen-tier Khau Coc Cha Pass are the two unmissable shots.
September–October brings golden rice terraces and clear skies, while May–June offers lush green landscapes. The loop runs year-round — your guide adjusts the route for weather and road conditions.
Onward transfers leave from our Cao Bang office on Day 3. We can put you on a limousine bus back to Hanoi or arrange a private car to Ha Giang, Sapa, or other destinations. Staying an extra night is also an option — just let us know in advance.
The price covers transfers, your Easy Rider, all entrance fees, every meal from Day 1, accommodation, drinking water, and safety gear. You'll want to budget separately for personal expenses (snacks, drinks, laundry), personal travel insurance (strongly recommended), tips for your guide, and VAT.
