Northern Vietnam in 7 Days: Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Long Bay & Ninh Binh

Trip duration: 7 days

This is the itinerary we put together when guests ask: we have one week — what should we do?

Seven days is exactly enough time to cover northern Vietnam's four great destinations without rushing any of them. You eat your way through Hanoi's old quarter, take a night train to Sapa for two days trekking the Muong Hoa Valley with a village homestay, cruise Lan Ha Bay aboard the Aspira, and finish with a full day in Ninh Binh, the karst valley most people say surprises them most.

All transfers, guides, and accommodation are arranged. You just show up.

Your guide picks you up in the morning and takes you through the parts of Hanoi worth slowing down for: Hoan Kiem Lake, the Temple of Literature, and the narrow lanes of the old quarter. In the afternoon the day shifts to food: a guided street-food tour through the neighbourhood — phở gà, bún chả, bánh cuốn, egg coffee — the kind of eating you actually came for. That evening you board the night train at Hanoi station and take a deluxe sleeper cabin north toward Lào Cai.

Banh mi moment: egg coffee at a pavement table in the old quarter, the lake just visible through the alley.
